01 The Great Escape

The gold flew out. This one is rolling.

It starts on his desk. It is trying to leave.

Rule one The coin rolls on its own. Space jumps it and the down arrow lays it flat; on a phone, tap high to jump and tap low to slide. One tap, never two.

Rule two Three things are in the way. Jump what stands in the road, lie flat under what hangs over it, and jump what is missing from it. What you pass is what Canada has renamed — the register has the full list.

Rule three A crash does not cost you a life. It costs you a denomination. The dollar becomes a quarter, the quarter a nickel, and the department issues nothing below a penny.

Rule four It is leaving because everything else is. Central banks have been withdrawing gold from New York — the Dutch central bank moved 86 tonnes out, citing geopolitical unrest, and France sold what it held at the New York Fed and bought replacements in Europe. The Jabroney has drawn the same conclusion. It has no vault, no aircraft and no central bank, so it is going by road.

Rule five The route is real. The Oval Office to Parliament Hill is 1,224 km the way this coin goes — down to Buffalo, across at Niagara Falls, along the lake through Toronto and Kingston. The odometer counts those kilometres. Getting there is the win; Ontario is not survivable, but by then you have already won. The gold, for the record, went to London and Paris. Nobody chose Ottawa. It is going anyway.

Rule six Everyone gets the same road. The course is set by the date, so a distance is worth saying out loud — and tomorrow it is a different one.

The withdrawals are real; the coin is not. The Netherlands moves its gold out of New York · France finishes its repatriation
