He picked the metaphor. We only finished it.
Asked on Fox News how the trade war with Canada would play out, the U.S. Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent, reached for a story about a dog park: “This little yippy dog used to bark away, and for a long time, a 110-pound German shepherd was ignoring the dachshund and then one day she had enough.” Canada, in that telling, is the dachshund.
The department accepts the metaphor and returns it. If the arrangement is to be described in dogs, then somebody in it is on a leash, wearing a collar with the name of their employer on the tag, and it is not the one doing the barking.
Six days earlier he had told CNBC: “I think this is very unfortunate that Prime Minister Carney has turned this into a political shouting match. I mean, we’re not at war with Canada.” The department notes that this is also what the dog says.
The name is this department’s proposal. The dollar has not been issued. Sit. Stay. Spin.
What’s on it, exactly?
The obverse. THE LAPDOG DOLLAR around the top, SCOTT BESSENT · $1 around the bottom, and a small dog in a suit and glasses wearing a collar tagged TREASURY, with the leash pulled taut above it.
The reverse. A studded collar with a dollar-sign tag marked SB and a leash clipped to its ring. BARKS AT CANADA above, HEELS FOR TRUMP below, and SIT · STAY · SPIN struck small at the bottom. The rim is smooth.
The quotation is real and the rest is a joke. Scott Bessent is the United States Secretary of the Treasury and made the remark above in a Fox News interview with Laura Trump; it was widely reported. Everything else on this page — the coin, the collar, the leash and the commands — is invented satire of a public figure’s public words.
